TORONTO — The Ontario Court of Appeal on Friday re-affirmed a law banning pit bull-type dogs in the province.
Last month, lawyer Clayton Ruby told a three-judge panel the definition of a pit bull under the Dog Owner’s Liability Act is vague because it snares dozens of breeds that look like pit bulls, but are other breeds, half-breeds or mutts.
Ruby said Friday he was disappointed by the ruling.
“Sadly, the absolute and unnecessary ban on ‘pit bulls’ in Ontario remains,” the lawyer said in a statement.
“We are very disappointed with the decision of the court of appeal. We continue to believe that the definition of ‘pit bull’ is overly broad and vague. The evidence clearly demonstrates that the definition captures dogs that pose no threat to any person or animal.”
He added the court has simply accepted the government’s assertion that there is a ‘reasoned apprehension of harm’ about ‘pit bulls’ to justify the ban, without allowing opponents to show that there is no credible evidence to support this.
Under the provincial law, pit bulls are defined as American pit bull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire bull terrier or any dog that looks similar.
Owners are required to have their dogs neutered, muzzled and on a leash in public.
Violators face a maximum penalty of $10,000 and six months in jail.

This was the most BIASED Judgement I had ever heard,it was based
on nothing.You will note the Judges remained anonymous I was not surprised at this,the question I would like to have asked them “SIMPLY HOW MUCH” was settled in little envelopes by the GENOCIDAL

Im confused, you’re saying the liberals are the nazis? Liberals and Nazis are very different and liberals usually dont ban pitbulls, conservatives do and possibly nazis. This ban really sucks though, I went to Vancouver recently and its amazing to see such a different attitude on the other side of the country. I own a Rottie/amstaff mix and Im getting posted to petawawa Ont. Can I bring my 8mth old with me? I can’t leave him behind… I just can’t. I have 3 kids and 4 cats, and my dog loves us all to death. He is very sad when Im not with him. You should see him when I come home.. He is super happy to see me..lol
sadly im pretty sure its all of Ontario that has the ban.. I know what you mean.. I couldnt go anywhere my dog isnt allowed. It would be like abandoning a kid, especially after having her for 10 years now.

Speaking of IGNORANT people.What about the people who say ” there is no proof that Pits are any more dangerous than any other breed of dog”. I have seen way too many news articles and video footage of Pit Bulls who their owners thought they were perfectly harmless some time before their SWEET PETS ripped apart one of their own kids or neighbors kids or pets.And still some of them say it wasn’t the dogs fault,it was just a reaction from them that is natural.All the while their kid is lying in a hospital bed ( and sometimes a morgue!!! ) disfigured for life.Please don’t give me the ” It’s the fault of the owner” excuse.It is bred ( inter-bred ) into these dogs pure and simple.For you to bring Black People into this leaves me thinking there may be some racist tendencies on your part though.If me HATING these dogs and Rotty’s is what you call RACIST and ignorant so be it.But take a look deep inside and ask yourself why you did bring Black people into this discussion.

Being a Pit bull owner myself i know first hand what loving and gentel creatures these dogs are, its too bad the idiots that we call politicains forget that the circumstances a dog is raised in whether it be pent up or kept without good exercise and discipline makes the dog anxious and angry, and most people belive the so called rep that pitbulls have of being blood suckers and raise thier own pit bulls like that, we need to get these people the information they actually need!

Fear is pathetic but go ahead and live in it. There is no such thing as an evil animal only evil people. Its as possible that ALL pitbulls are dangerous as it is that ALL black people will rob you. Thats why its racial profiling, yes, even animals are victims of profiling. The “pibul problem” goes way beyond what is natural for the breed due to horrible people training them this way. It is not a pitbull thing its on an individual basis as with people of all races as well. If you believe that every single pitbul is evil you by default believe that all of a race of humans can be evil as well. There is no difference. No entire breed, race or group of ANYTHING is identical or capable of the same good or bad things. This is why animals and humans have personalities and the capability to learn and react to different environments. You talk about pitbulls as if they are a clone army. I’m just saying, I’ve had 3 rottweilers and i currently have my second pitbull and they’ve been in multiple dog shows. They are the most athletic amazing breed you can own, they are extremely caring. I get compliments on my dogs everyday on how beautiful and intelligent they are. I’m only happy I don’t live in Ontario, I feel sorry for you who cannot enjoy one of (if not the) best breeds of dogs in the world.
Ok hello everyone my name is Jacky i absulutley love pitbulls my neibors across the street have two there names are lucy and fido. Fido is suffering from a tummer and lucy has never even hurt a flie. My own dog jasmin loves them and they are best friends unfortanitly fido may pass on soon as he has been fighting his tummer for long he is getting older. My point is this so called “DOUG” is a: a loser b:has no life and c: is a load of crap how i know this is because all the pit bulls i know have never hurt any one or anything and trust me i know alot of pit balls and from what Ceazer Million has tote me the olny way a pit bull would hurt a person is because their owner is a complete and tottle idiot! I’m afraid that the Pit bull requires a unique sort of proprietor…these pet dogs, regardless of how ‘trusting’ still have teeth, are still creatures without having moral principles and when they DO bite, won’t allow go. As in all creatures…some often be more suseptable to instinctual behavior and time and time once again, this breed tends to complete just that.

I am the owner of a beautiful pit mix. The worst thing about this ban is my dog has become so desocialized that now she seems exhibit all the bad tendencies that have villified pits over the years. She has been bitten three times while on a leash and muzzled by other dogs whose owners are irresponsible and let their dog roam free to terorize. Had my dog done the same she’d be put down. Before the ban my dog was so well adjusted and got along with all dogs and people. Now she still loves people but get edgy and nervous when she sees other dogs. When will the politicians wake up and realize it has to go after the owners and make them responsible not the breed. The idiots that owned pits have moved onto bigger and stronger dogs and soon we will see more bans on other breeds. Its time to ban bad owners not the poor dogs. I just feel sorry for my dog because she can no longer play and get the exercise and socialization that she craves and needs. the ban has just made her a worse tempered dog.

Well i definitely a am a supporter of pitties and rotties i do and have owned both in the past now i own a champagne/pinto colored/green hazel eyed amstaff who is dear to our children and family as a whole whos name is rock he is being trained. I would have to say that a well trained dog from birth will be a loving companion. if you teach them bad habits or if you leave them alone or mistreat them in any way , then yes they could turn against you. Train your children as well as your dogs. when you can communicate with your pack you will all be happier. Im sorry for the poor fella here who seems to have stayed indoors to long . doug i believe, and any others who supported the ban, yall need to get out and enjoy the world and dogs too. have patience be loving and kind and those things will be reflected upon you.
One more stupid law made by ignorant people. pitbulls are no more naturally violent than any other breed, they are simply more commonly trained as attack dogs by there violent owners. If the ontario government is banning pitbulls for being unpredictable they should ban humans also as humans are by nature far more violent and unpredictable than any animal. That is a fact.
